Sad But Sustained
Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
PSALM 55:22 NASB
There will be times in your season of singleness when you just feel sad. Another friend in your friend group gets married, making you the last single woman of the bunch. A coworker makes a hurtful comment like, “But you’re so great, I can’t imagine why you’d still be single!” A guy you were talking to and getting excited about ghosts you or breaks things off, leaving you with the reminder that you’ll have to start all over again. It’s not about whether these moments will come, it’s more about how you respond when they do. Our passage today reminds us that, especially in these moments of need, you can come to the Lord for strength and sustenance. God is not embarrassed by your feelings, nor is He waiting to exhort you to “cheer up” or “look on the bright side.” Whenever you feel sad, He is there for you.
Experiencing ups and downs in your singleness is normal and expected. It’s a part of life. It’s okay to feel sad; to mourn that your life may not have turned out the way you pictured it. It’s okay to cry or to be angry over the loss of a dream. It’s also okay to feel frustrated by the well-meaning comments friends and family members make. Whatever you’re feeling, it’s okay. The important thing to remember is that if you sit in this sadness, nothing will come of it but pain. But if you bring to God the feelings that are weighing you down, He will sustain you. God may not make these feelings go away, but He is a God of life and peace and is there to offer you both. In times of sadness, He will be that calming presence. God is with you; He will never leave you. Even in moments of sadness, remember that the Lord is there to support, comfort, and provide for you. He’s got you.
Right Now Reminder:
You will experience times of sadness as a single woman. In these moments, bring your feelings to God, your sustenance and your peace.
