[Deeply Rooted] Down Memory Laneনমুনা
Remember Who God Is
Have you heard of amnesia? It’s a form of memory loss caused by injury, illness, or trauma. It takes away a person’s ability to access the memory centers of their brain. It has tragic effects. Some people with amnesia forget cherished loved ones. Some even forget details about their identities and their lives. It can be sad to see and difficult to experience.
There’s another type of amnesia that affects many Christians, and it has its own heartbreaking effects. It’s called spiritual amnesia. Spiritual amnesia is a temporary lapse in our divine memory. It causes us to forget God’s faithfulness, our identity as His children, and the lessons learned on our sacred journey. When these things slip from our awareness, we require a gentle reminder to restore our understanding and strengthen our faith. That’s what this devotional is for. It is a three-day journey down memory lane to help us shake off the effects of spiritual amnesia and stir our confidence in God and His promises.
If you’re facing spiritual amnesia today, start by remembering who God is. This is so important and the best place to start. From the beginning, God has wanted to be known. He created humans to live in relationship with Him and grow in understanding His love and the likeness of His character. He has revealed Himself to generation after generation of His people. One of God’s most significant self-revelations was to a man named Moses. God revealed Himself as Yahweh, “I Am Who I Am.” This name reminds us of God’s transcendent majesty and His intimate involvement with His creation and people.
The Bible records more revelations of God and gives many other names for God that reveal wondrous facets of His love and character. Names like Jehovah Jireh, which means “God will provide,” or Jehovah Shalom, which means “the Lord is Peace.” Another wonderful name is Jehovah Raah, meaning “the Lord my Shepherd.” In these names alone, we see that God cares about our needs, brings peace, and is a gentle Shepherd who leads us like His sheep.
Let these names encourage your heart today and bring to remembrance moments when God has been Provider, Peace, and Shepherd to you. Dig into His Word and find more of His revelation to us.
Thought of the Day: It can be easy to forget God’s faithfulness and the lessons I’ve learned on my walk with Him. Today, I will begin to refresh my memory and stir my faith by remembering who God is and who He has revealed Himself to be through Jesus and His Word.
