The Apostle's Fast in the Ancient Faith

DAY 12 OF 12

Day 12: Embracing Faith, Gentleness, and Temperance in the Journey of Faith

On this final day of the Apostle's Fast devotional, we contemplate the virtues of Faith, Gentleness, and Temperance. These pillars of our fast have guided us toward a more profound trust in God, a softer approach to others, and a balanced way of living. Each day has offered us a unique lens through which to view our spiritual lives, challenging us to grow deeper in our relationship with God and with one another.

Faith has been our anchor, reminding us to trust in God's promises and to walk by faith, not by sight. Drawing strength from the faith of the apostles and the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers, we are empowered to walk with confidence in the path set before us. Let us nurture our faith through prayer, Scripture study, and fellowship, trusting in God's faithfulness to lead us onward. Actionable Item: Set aside time each day for reading and reflecting on Scripture, allowing God's word to strengthen your faith.

Gentleness has taught us the power of a soft answer and a humble spirit, guiding us to lead and correct with love. As we reflect on the gentleness exhibited by the apostles and echoed by the Early Church Fathers, we are called to emulate their example in our relationships and interactions. Let us cultivate a spirit of gentleness, extending grace and understanding to those around us, even in the face of adversity. Actionable Item: In your interactions with others, especially in moments of disagreement, choose to speak and act with gentleness and respect.

Temperance has called us to self-control and moderation, freeing us from the bondage of excess and leading us to a life of balance. By embracing temperance as a discipline of the fast, we learn to govern our appetites and align our wills with God's. As we reflect on the lives of the apostles and heed the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers, let us exercise self-control in all areas of life, pursuing holiness with fervent devotion. Actionable Item: Identify one area of your life where you struggle with excess, and commit to practicing moderation, whether it's in eating, spending, screen time, or another area.

As we integrate these virtues into our daily walk, they become more than aspirations; they are the living expressions of our faith, shaping us into beacons of Christ's presence in the world. They are the fruit of the Spirit, growing within us as we abide in Christ and seek to follow Him more closely and then ultimately this fruit will mature and ripen, blossoming for all to see Christ in us, for the glory of His Holy Name.

Our formal period of fasting for the Apostle’s Fast will come to an end, but our spiritual journey presses on, as those who are running the race, running in a way that we may win (1 Corinthians 9:24). With hearts imbued with Faith, Gentleness, and Temperance, let us courageously step forward, resolved to live out our faith with intention and grace. Continually nourished spiritually, may we follow in the footsteps of the apostles, shepherded by the Spirit and fortified by the enduring mercy of Jesus Christ.

Let us pray:

Lord of all virtue, as we conclude the Apostle's Fast devotional, we cherish the spiritual growth You have fostered in us. Help us to carry the torch of Faith, Gentleness, and Temperance into every aspect of our lives, illuminating the path for others to find You. May our journey be a testament to Your transformative power and unending love. Amen. May God bless you richly with His never-ending and never-failing love.
