On Life and Lightsabers
I am a mother of two young, spirited boys. A fun aspect of parenting right now is that at 5 and 7 years old, my sons are finally old enough to enjoy some of my favourite classic movies. Most notably, this year we watched the original Star Wars trilogy. Cozily tucked under blankets on our oversized sectional, my boys were wide-eyed with excitement and wonder during their first contact with this unknown galaxy far, far away. Suddenly—as exposure to truly genius works of art and entertainment often does—a new realm of inspiration, imagination, and inquiry was unleashed. Star Wars exploded within our family, touching nearly every conversation, every object, every wardrobe selection. Every cylindrical item became a lightsaber. Playtime became Jedi training sessions. Fielding their frequent questions about the Force and the Jedi became a daily mental workout!
As a writer, mother, and growth-minded individual, I am always on the lookout for opportunities to learn. In the Bible, Jesus taught his disciples and followers using parables—simple stories to illustrate spiritual lessons. He distilled the Pharisees' religious and rigorous interpretation of Scripture into simple truths about God's grace and His Kingdom that His followers could understand and apply. Jesus used examples from His present-day culture and environment like agriculture, food, and weather.
He is still doing this for me today. The Holy Spirit reveals the most profound and extraordinary spiritual truths through my ordinary life. By grounding Biblical principles in the context of my everyday life of work, relationships, and family, I can put them into practice and see progress.
So, the more I considered Star Wars—especially the Force and the unconventional Jedi way of facing challenges and managing conflict—the Holy Spirit highlighted the parallels between Star Wars and His Word. Just like my boys, I was wide-eyed and awestruck when I realized—Jesus is the original Jedi Master!
Join me over the next few days as we unpack the Jedi ways that point us to Jesus.
Reflect:
What is your favourite parable in the Bible? How does its spiritual lesson become grounded in your everyday life?
Let's Pray:
Thank you, God, for being a good father who wants to teach me as your child. Open my heart and mind to the lessons You are teaching all around me.
