Tell It to the Lord
PSALM 34:15
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.
Friend, I don’t know what you’re going through at this exact moment, but I know somebody who would love to hear about it, someone whose eyes are ever on you for your good, someone whose ears are thoughtfully attending to your cries. Some of the best advice I’ve ever received in my entire life is contained in five words: “Tell it to the Lord.” This invitation has the power to completely change our lives. Whatever it is you are wrestling with, whatever it is you’re struggling with, whatever it is you’re carrying, whatever it is you’re burdened by, or whatever it is you’re happy about . . . for every type of emotion and every form of feeling you could have, the summons is to “Tell it to the Lord.”
The Lord’s ears are the most understanding that you have access to. He invites you to share everything with Him and He is never irritated by the fears or tears you bring to Him. He is able to sympathize with your every weakness, to weep when you weep, and to rejoice when you rejoice (Heb. 4:15). In communion with Him, your circumstances may not immediately change, but your heart will be changed by His presence.
The Lord wants to hear from you. Here is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Prov. 18:24). He is a friend who empathizes with the poor of spirit, for He knows what it is like to walk this earth full of brokenness and broken hearts (John 11:35). As the old hymn proclaims, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!”1 My friend, share your heart with your Lord. It is safe and wise and welcome for you to tell it to the Lord: “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (2 Chron. 16:9 NIV).
Reflect
Is there anything you would be hesitant to share with the Lord? Does it help you to understand that He already knows everything you’ve gone through, everything you’re thinking, and everything you’ve ever done? He invites you to commune with Him through prayer on anything and everything, and He will hear your cries.
Let’s Pray
Father, I’m so grateful that Your eyes are constantly on me for my good and that You hear my prayers and all my cries for help. You say, “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me” (Ps. 50:15). I want to talk with You about everything, as someone would their best friend and closest ally. Thank You for the invitation and the encouragement to share my heart. (What do you need to tell the Lord? Will you tell Him?). My heart is Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
