God and Me: Devotions from Time of Grace

DAY 28 OF 31

God and My Legacy

One of the most famous Bible misquotes is, "Money is the root of all evil." The Bible actually says that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Scriptural warnings against the addictive power of materialism do abound, as well as warnings against cravings for fame. You may wish that your investments turn out to be lucrative, but what adjective is usually used with the word "lucre"? Yep, "filthy."

And yet wealth and fame are not evil in themselves. In fact, God loves to bless believers with those very things as they seek to leave a legacy for their children. "Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever" (Psalm 112:1-3).

While you may have to endure poverty, that doesn't make it a career goal. Seeking to build your family's assets so that your children and grandchildren can become financially secure and become generous givers is a great goal. The God we worship is not a god of scarcity but the God of abundance. "[He] is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Do you have a will?
