What Is the Day of the Lord?

DAY 4 OF 7

Jesus’ coming as the new day of the Lord

Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Matthew 24:30)

The phrase “the day of the Lord”, or parallel phrases like “the day of judgment” or “that day”, are picked up in the New Testament and given a new meaning. They almost always refer to Jesus’ second coming. Jesus says that on “that day” the sun will be darkened and the moon turned to blood, which is imagery borrowed from Isaiah 13:10 and Joel 2:31, passages about the day of the Lord.

By this, Jesus makes clear that His second coming will be the final and ultimate day of the Lord. On that day, when the trumpet sounds, Jesus will come back in all His glory. The dead will be raised and all believers will be gathered to Jesus. Everyone who has been faithful to Him “will forever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). He will judge the evildoers and do away with sin once and for all. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Do you long for that day of our Lord? Do you, like John in Revelation 22:20, pray that Jesus will come? Is this your ultimate hope?
