The Book of Proverbs on how to treat the poor
Open your heart and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you from these verses in Proverbs. Let us tread carefully when it comes to people experiencing poverty. God has given us the poor. He will ask for an account of our behaviour.
Proverbs 14:31 – Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honours him.
Proverbs 19:17 - Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.
Proverbs 21:13 – Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.
Proverbs 29:7 – The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor; The wicked does not understand such concern.
Proverbs 22:22-23 – Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate, for the LORD will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them.
Proverbs 31:9 – Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Proverbs 28:27 – Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides (shuts) his eyes will get many a curse.
Obedience: Ask the Holy Spirit to show you your attitude towards people experiencing poverty. Is it godly? Would God be satisfied with it? Do you know the name of the poor person who knocks at your gate/door? Do you know that they are made in the image of God – just like you?
About this Plan
We have poor people all around us. God is serious about the fact that the church needs to care for the poor - and we neglect it. This reading plan addresses that need.
