"B.I.G" - That’s Who He Is
What, then, are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He did not even spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. How will he not also with him grant us everything? - Romans 8:31 - 32
Have you ever met someone who far exceeded your expectations? Or have you ever gone into a situation with one expectation, only to be totally surprised when it’s so much better than you imagined?
Ephesians 3:20 reminds us God is like that: He “is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us.” If you were to express the greatness of God right now in five different ways, you’d fall terribly short. Human thought cannot conceive how big and great God is.
As Paul described God’s greatness in his letter to the Romans, that’s where he landed, asking, “What, then, are we to say about these things?” (v. 31). All these things include:
- Sending His Son to free us from sin and death (v. 2)
- Giving us the Holy Spirit, who intercedes for us (vv. 9-10, 26)
- Adopting us as His children, making us heirs of His kingdom with Christ (vv. 14,17)
- Helping us when we’re weak (v. 26)
- Calling us to do His work in the world (v. 28)
That’s pretty amazing, right? So, like Paul, what can we say except, “With the one true God, who is all-powerful, being for us, who or what could possibly stand against us and win?” God is stronger, higher, and bigger than everything and everyone—and He is for you. In every situation and every problem, you can trust Him. He is good and bigger than you can imagine, and He is on your side.
1) Listen to Kelontae Gavin’s “B.I.G.” What lyrics stand out to you as particularly encouraging? Which stand out to you as most challenging?
2) If you are “for” someone or something, what does that entail? What does it mean to you to know God is for you?
3) Thank God for being big. Thank Him for His work on the cross that is the ultimate example of His bigness. Ask Him to help you trust that He can meet your needs and that He is for you.
