DAY THREE
Believing God by Rocky Fleming
Scripture: Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?” (John 16:31 NLT)
Thought: Here’s a quote by C.S. Lewis to consider – “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him (Jesus). (They say) ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg, or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon, or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
In the scripture above Jesus asked His disciples, “Do you now believe?” These men had been with Him for years and had seen His miracles and heard His words. Still, they wavered in their belief. Maybe it is because they had not yet sold out in their belief that He was and is who He said He is and what was prophesied about Him. He is the Son of God. He is God. To move forward as Jesus’ disciple, this sold-out belief in these facts is required.
Application: So, how are you doing with believing Jesus? Have you totally and irrevocably abandoned all contrary thoughts and messages about His deity, His faithfulness and His honesty, or do you still waiver with unbelief and doubts? There will be a point in your life when He looks directly at you and asks, “Do you believe ME?”
If this were to happen right now as you read this and Jesus asks you this question, how would you answer Him? He knows everything about you and me, even more than we know ourselves. Honestly, are you perhaps not sure? Ask Him now if He sees in you a man or woman who absolutely believes Him and is willing to live your life with this firm assurance, or if you are somehow wavering and not moving forward in your belief in these facts?
Q: After your prayer, what do you think the Holy Spirit told you in answering your questions?
Q: What do you feel led to do with His answer?
Response: Learning to trust Jesus and taking His promises to heart takes time. It is a daily surrender of our agenda to Him, our plans to Him, and the outcome of any problem to Him. It is up to you and me to believe Him and trust Him. We will never find the peace of God that He promises until we simply take Him at His word. Start your faith walk with Him today with a declaration through prayer that you believe Him, and you will trust Him. Allow Him to take you forward from this point to be a man or woman who’s most identifiable characteristic is that you trust Him, plain and simple. You believe Him.
