The Thread: Part II

DAY 3 OF 30

Falling Prey to Fear

Abram and Sarai traveled to Egypt to escape a famine. Abram feared the Egyptians because he thought they might kill him to take his wife, Sarai, for themselves. Abram's fear was justified from a human point of view, but he missed a chance to trust God and the promise he gave just a few verses earlier in chapter twelve: "I will bless you, and through your family, all the nations of the earth will be blessed." Pharaoh took Sarai from Abram anyway, and then God struck the palace with severe disease.

Here's the truth: Fear is a powerful motivator, and dishonesty leads to confusion every time, often resulting in mistreating others or worse. When have you done things motivated by fear that led to others getting hurt? Identifying the emotions that motivate a decision you're about to make is a step toward maturity. Are you acting from fear or trust?

Question: In this instance, who trusted God more: Abram or Pharaoh? What things in your life are you tempted to be dishonest about because you are afraid?

Prayer: Ask God to help you trust him and be honest, even when you are scared or don't know what will happen.
