Understanding Your Purposeনমুনা
Of all of the gifts I’ve received from God, teaching is probably my favorite. It is a strength I use daily, but there is one area I’d love to teach myself to enjoy, cleaning. I am not fond of cleaning. In comparison to my wife, cleaning is not one of my strengths. I can move things around and make our home tidy, but she makes the house look, feel and smell brand new! I can’t clean like her, no matter how hard I try. Just between you and me, I'm glad I don’t have to.
If you’re wondering how cleaning and purpose are connected, let me put it this way, the King is coming to your home today, and every other day of your life. Your primary purpose is to make Him welcome. Although our holy God is everywhere, He desires indwelling communion with us.
Why would this Holy and perfect God want to visit a lowly, imperfect, and sometimes, filthy home or heart like mine? His love is the answer. Jesus leaves heaven and takes on human flesh to make this very point. Then, He repeatedly upsets the Scribes and Pharisees by socializing with “unholy” people, like a short tax collector named Zacchaeus. Tax -collectors are known to be cheaters working for an oppressive and ungodly government in those days, so Zacchaeus’ favor among others is probably smaller than he is. Nevertheless, Jesus notices Zacchaeus who climbs high enough to catch a glimpse of Him as He walks by. This desire, this curiosity, this determination, is what catches Jesus’ attention, and He invites Himself to Zacchaeus’ home.
I used to get stressed out trying to be holy enough for the King of Heaven to dwell in me, because it is impossible. Our Father is more concerned about a whole-hearted devotion than an immaculate presentation because no one can clean like He can. Every day, Jesus desires to enter our home and wash our feet, just as He did with Peter. Like Peter, we may be tempted to resist, but wherever He goes, His holy presence automatically cleans things up and makes them whole.
Instead of striving for holiness, a standard we could never meet, your part, your purpose is to open your heart and make Him welcome with desire, curiosity, and determination. He will do the rest.
