Why Gratitude?

Gratitude is a choice--but why choose it?

The good news is that studies show practicing gratitude improves our sleep, moods, and even immunity. In addition, it can help reduce stress and is a powerful way to change your mindset.

The bad news: just because you begin practicing gratitude doesn’t mean everything in your life suddenly becomes hunky-dory. Paul wrote about this in Philippians 4:12 when he said, I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

Gratitude is an essential part of being a follower of Jesus.

No matter how hard life is at this moment if you have Jesus, you have all you need. And that is something to be grateful for every day.

But we forget.

Life comes at us from so many directions that we can get overwhelmed, sad, anxious, or discouraged. These are normal human reactions to challenging circumstances like wrestling with addiction or your child walking away from God. Maybe you have too many bills, your spouse wants a divorce, or you recently lost your job.

Whatever your circumstances are, if you allow negative thoughts to linger, they can turn us into bitter, resentful humans--this doesn’t make us great representatives of what Jesus has done in our lives.

You see, gratitude is trusting that our good Father provides for every need. When we show thankfulness for what the Lord has done for us—even as we face unimaginable situations—we are showing the world that as a follower of Jesus, we believe his promises:

He has promised us hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

He can do more than we ask, hope, or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)

He works all things for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purposes. (Romans 8:28)

Begin practicing gratitude for his promises today. Let God change your heart from the inside out.

Action steps: Thank God for his promises listed above. Speak them out loud over your life throughout the day, and notice if your mood and thoughts begin to change for the better.

Prayer: Father, show me how to be more grateful. No matter my circumstances, help me look for the good in my life. I love you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
