LIVING WORTHY OF OUR CALLING BY GROWING TOGETHER
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors, and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV)
Background
Paul introduces this chapter by reminding his readers of his current imprisonment (4:1). At this time, Paul was under house arrest in Rome, awaiting his defense before Emperor Nero (Acts 28:30-31).
Observation
After three chapters of teaching their identity in Christ and the inheritance which belongs to them, Paul urges his readers to respond to these truths in practical ways (4:1-3). Jew and Gentile are united into one body, through one faith in one Lord (4:4-5). But Jesus has given different gifts to different people (4:6, 11). Each one is called to use their gift so that all of God’s people are equipped for works of service and able to build up the church in love (4:12-16).
Interpretation
As you read Ephesians 4:1-16, reflect on the struggle it must have been for the Ephesian believers to walk in unity while embracing their different gifts given by Christ. Perhaps the reminder of Paul’s willingness to be imprisoned for the Lord was his way of encouraging them that he, too, was facing great difficulty. The necessary foundation for walking worthy of the gospel’s call, despite the cost, was Paul’s identity message from Ephesians 1-3. In Ephesians 4:1-16, Paul paints a vision of the church building off this foundation. The diversity of their gifts would be their major strength, making it possible for everyone to grow into full maturity in Christ.
Application
Paul writes more about the variety of gifts and unity of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12. What gift has Christ given you for the building up of his church? How are you sharing this gift with your local body?
