The First Mother - Eve
Women are amazing. God created women with a specific purpose and plan in mind, and throughout scripture, we find story after story of God using women to accomplish great things. This Mother’s Day, we want to highlight a few stories of these women—and a good place to start is with the first woman ever.
God created Adam, the first man, and put him in charge of taking care of the earth. But there was a problem: Adam was incomplete. So God created a woman, Eve. Genesis 2:18 says this: “Then the Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him."
Many people read this verse and assume that women were created for the sole purpose of helping men and being second-class sidekicks. But there is a much greater significance in the word helper as God uses it. The Hebrew translation is the word Ezer, which is used about 20 other times throughout the Old Testament. The term Ezer is used twice about Eve, three times to talk about military power, and sixteen times to describe God. Ezer-helpers are not inferior assistants; they are equals who fill a need. When God created women, he completed his creation and was very pleased with what he made.
God created men and women equally to display his image to the world. So, if you are a woman, how do you need to embrace your identity and purpose? And if you’re not a woman, how do you need to show appreciation and respect to the women God has placed in your life?
