Courage in the Life of a Believer

DAY 1 OF 9

Courage to admit that we need God

“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Maybe people around you tell you that Christianity is particularly fit for the faint of heart. People who are strong and confident don’t need a superpower in their lives to be brave. They are in control of their lives.

It’s great to feel strong and bold. But what if disaster strikes and you lose your money, your health, the people around you? Those who put their trust in God receive courage from a source that will never fail them. They tap into the strength of a loving, trustworthy, caring Father. Those who are confident of their God, instead of themselves, are able to keep their backs straight.

Courage that is anchored in the eternal God gives strength to do things - simple, mundane tasks but also seemingly impossible things. It helps to follow Jesus even outside our comfort zone. It helps to obey God in all things. It helps to resist sinful currents in the culture we live in. It helps to wait on God.

David said once: “By my God I leap over a wall.” (Psalm 18:29) In this series of devotionals we will zoom in on how faith in God supplies us with courage.

What do you think? Does being courageous mean that you are never afraid?
