Serving
When we look at the life of Jesus, we know He was different. And perhaps one of the things that made Him stand out the most was the way He cared for others. As the perfect Son of God, Jesus deserved to be served by everyone who encountered Him.
But instead, He chose to serve them. And He told us to serve others, too:
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:13-15 NIV
When we serve others, we aren’t just following Jesus’ command. We’re also meeting the needs of the people around us. But in order to meet the needs, we first need to see them.
Sometimes, we can plainly see the needs of the people around us. But other times, it’s not as obvious. If you’re not sure where to start, consider the things you’re passionate about. Is there a certain cause that makes you righteously angry? Or a non-profit whose mission ignites your fire? Get involved there.
Then, consider the gifts and talents you have. We all have something we’re good at. Maybe yours is the gift of patience with children or an ability to empathize with those around you. Perhaps it’s a more tangible talent that could be used at church or in your community.
Finally, think about the people around you—at school, work, or in your local community. Is there a common need that you see or know about? What can you do with the resources you have to make a difference?
Serving others requires sacrifice from us. It requires our time and our energy. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
Challenge: How can you use your gifts and passions to serve those around you?
