Shepherded: Psalm 23 for the Single Christianনমুনা
Honey, I’m Home
In the final words of Psalm 23, David names two things you can be SURE of for all of your days:
- God’s goodness and love will never leave your side.
- His presence will be your home forever.
Consider what that means for your life.
Yes, there are still uncertainties, but here’s what we know for sure: You have every reason to be excited about your future - it is full of God’s goodness. The love of God for you is going to be a present reality every day of your life. And the presence of God? That’s your true home. You can put your roots down there.
Home is where you are loved and comfortable, no matter how you feel, how you look, or what mood you are in. Home is where you are fully known and fully loved. Home is a safe place where you can be yourself.
If Jesus is your Shepherd, His presence is your home.
Maybe you’ve tried finding home elsewhere. Maybe, like me, you tried to make a relationship your home. It might have seemed to work or felt like a good move for a time, but in the end, there is no true sense of home to be found for a sheep apart from the presence of the Shepherd.
Jesus once likened Himself (in Luke 15:3-7) to a shepherd who leaves the flock to find the one sheep that’s wandered off. What does he do when he finds the sheep?
“He joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home.”
Growing up, I heard that story taught, and I always saw that sheep that wandered off as the rebel - the one insistent on going his own way. Now that I’ve had some life experience, I wonder if maybe that sheep just forgot where home was. Or maybe he thought he could find something better if he looked elsewhere - you know, explored a bit.
I can relate to that sheep. Can you?
Maybe, like me, you’ve looked for home in a relationship. Or maybe life has been hard and you’ve simply lost your way and aren’t sure how to get back.
Your Shepherd is ready to joyfully carry you home. Call for Him, and He will find you. No matter how intriguing other options may seem, for a sheep in Jesus’ flock, there is no better place to be than home in His presence forever.
