WHERE TO WORSHIP

For a number of years, Israel had, in effect, two tabernacles: David constructed a new tent for the ark of the covenant when he moved it to Jerusalem (1Ch 16:1), and in the meantime the old tabernacle remained at Gibeon (1Ch 16:39 – 40). During David’s reign, priests were assigned to both locations. Then, during Solomon’s reign, the temple was built on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem (2Ch 3:1 — 5:1). Throughout Israel’s history, various rival locations emerged as locations for the worship of God, including sites in Dan, Bethel and Samaria.

In Jesus’ conversation with a Samaritan woman — many generations after the time of David — she expressed confusion about this issue (Jn 4:19 – 24). Jesus clarified that the location of worship is less important than the inward dispositions of those worshiping him — the Father seeks those who worship “in the Spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:24). Because God is Spirit, he is not confined to any particular place of worship. God’s people can worship the Father in the name of the Son, in the power of the Spirit with reverence and joy — at any time and in any place.

Jesus, thank you for not restricting my worship to a specific location. I want to worship you at all times, whether at work, at home or at play. Amen.
