Proverbs | A 31-Day Devotional

DAY 17 OF 31

Watch Your Words - Proverbs 17

A big theme in Proverbs is our mouth and the impact our words have on our life. Sometimes we can be so reckless with what we say, not realizing that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). I believe that our words form our world, meaning that your attitude and the atmosphere of your life are determined by what you say. It’s easy to be negative and complain, but that outlook won’t produce good things in your life.

This theme is found not only in Proverbs but throughout the Bible. James 1:19 tells us that “everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” If you notice the progression in this verse, it tells us that our ability to control our anger is connected to being slow to speak. Anytime I have been irritated or frustrated in a situation, and then I said something quickly at the moment, I’ve always regretted it. When I refrained from saying something, it helped me cool down, and later I was thankful I remained quiet.

“Father, give me the discernment to watch my words today. I want to honor you in all that I say and do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
