In our unique household dynamic, my wife and son are the two escalators. To be clear, this is not solely a bad thing. In fact, because both are escalators, oftentimes they also serve as the gatekeepers to the fun. What began as a “Let’s enjoy the day together,” quickly turns into an overnight to Galveston for a beach day.
On the crazy side of things, a flick of water droplets will quickly turn into a full-blown water fight in the middle of our kitchen. I remember the showdown: Both have water spots on their clothes with my wife holding a full bottle of water and my son holding a half-drank juice cup. “I’ll do it. I’ll throw this whole bottle on you!” My son replied, “Don’t come any closer, I’ll do it. I’ll pour this juice on your head! I’LL DO IT!”
To their credit, they’re both people of their word — they both did it. The shenanigans ended with me separating them to their rooms to change while I started soaking up juice and water on the floor with all our pool towels. One of many fun moments none of us will forget.
I could have predicted the outcome from the moment the situation manifested because I know one thing to be true of both of them — they’re not afraid to do what they say they are going to do!
When I read about Sunday of Holy Week and prepare my soul to celebrate resurrection life, Matthew 28:6 jumps off the page, “He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen.” HE DID IT! Our God isn’t afraid to do what He said He would.
This is the confidence of our faith — that God is faithful, and He does what He promises. He’s promised us salvation, hope, and a future. He’s promised never to leave us, nor forsake us. He’s promised us power by the Holy Spirit, and His blessing on our obedience. The bedrock of these promises is celebrated today in the resurrection of Christ, just as He said!
As we celebrate Easter today remind your soul of this truth: We are celebrating Jesus doing exactly what He said He would do, for our salvation and our hope. Not only did He do it, but He did it for us. Have faith in His promises today!
