Overwhelmed

DAY 4 OF 7

The Name Of The Lord

Once we are determined to face and defeat what seeks to overwhelm us and utterly defeat us, the enemy will not sit back. Many times the pressure may seem to increase, but that is only because what once became overwhelming to us is now threatened and about to be overwhelmed. But this doesn’t happen in our own strength, but only in the strength of the Lord.

As David prepared to go to battle with Goliath, 1 Samuel 17:41 says, “So the Philistine came and began drawing near to David.” As this overwhelming giant began to come near David, he viciously cursed David, belittled David because of his age and inexperience, and threatened him by declaring that he would kill David and feed his body to the “birds of the air and the beasts of the field” (1 Samuel 17:44).

The challenge was on and about to get heated. David could have accepted discouragement and fear at this moment, and then flee, but he didn’t. In fact, when this giant that sought to overwhelm David came near, 1 Samuel 17:48 says, “David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.” David understood two things at this moment. One, if you continue to run from that which overwhelms you, it will never go away, but will continue to overwhelm. Two, you can’t defeat the giant in your own intelligence, willpower, wisdom, or strength.

David overwhelmed the giant by coming in the name of the Lord. He declared the majesty and unlimited power of God to Goliath by saying that the Lord was the Lord of hosts. In other words, naturally there may be a huge difference between him and Goliath, but supernaturally there was no comparison between the Lord and Goliath. David stated that he came in the name of the Lord of hosts to declare that the Lord was the ruler of a different kingdom, an eternal kingdom. In this eternal kingdom, the Lord was commander of the angelic armies. No one was as powerful as the one true God, the Lord.

David also said he came in the name of the Lord, God of the armies of Israel. He was declaring that not only was the Lord powerful, but His God was personal. David was the Lord’s, and the Lord was David’s God. He was the God of Israel. This awesome and powerful God is the loving and redeeming God whom David knew, poured His heart to, and worshiped. David was coming in the authority of the Lord, not his own strength.

Jesus is the King of kings, and the Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord (Philippians 2:9-11). Inspired by the Holy Spirit, David said the kingdom of God rules over all (Psalm 103:19). Jesus said to ask anything in His name and He will answer so that our joy may be full (John 14:13-14, 16:24). Peter and John commanded healing for a lame man in the name of Jesus (Acts 3:6-7,16).

What’s overwhelming you today? Come against that worry, fear, disease, hurt, and lies in the name of Jesus! No matter what tactic the enemy is using to drown you and defeat you, overwhelm the enemy in the name above all names, the name of Jesus Christ! When you come in His name, you come in His power and authority, and you will overwhelm what tries to overwhelm you!
