Abigail Duhon - I’m Not Ashamed

DAY 4 OF 4

The Power of Being a Witness

Being bold in your faith isn’t always about what you say, but how you live. Rachel Scott had a reputation for being kind and reaching out to those who were less popular in her school. After her death, many students told her parents about how much she did to help others and to prevent bullying in her school.

Rachel’s reputation was clearly one of where she acted on what she believed. But her journals made it clear that she had to decide to, as she put it, walk the talk.

Sometimes we need that inner confidence to speak or act at the right time. Acts, chapter 1, verse 8 is Jesus telling the disciples that they will receive power to speak about Him and all they have experienced. Jesus knew that in our humanity, we wouldn’t be able to just be bold and say the right things all the time.

That’s why He sent us the Holy Spirit to help us do those things. It’s obvious that when we try to do things on our own, we mess up a lot. The Holy Spirit is the source of power for us to be bold in our faith.

Imagine what would happen if you were to wear a t-shirt to school every day that had the words “I’M A CHRISTIAN” written in big bold letters. You wouldn’t necessarily have to say that to people, but the confidence to wear that shirt would be similar to what the Holy Spirit can do for you.

Your mind probably already thinks of how you will get made fun of for wearing that shirt, but isn’t it really about that? Shouldn’t our faith speak for us even without words?

One last point about not being ashamed of Jesus or being a Christian is in the book of Revelation, chapter 12, verse 11. The second part of that verse is very insightful. The writer said that we (Christians) not only overcome the enemy by the Blood of Jesus, but also by the words of our testimony (witnessing and sharing about how God worked in our life) but also that we are prepared to die for what we believe.

This is a reminder that teens like Rachel Scott relied on the power of the Holy Spirit to help her become an amazing witness for Jesus, even to her death.

Not every circumstance in your life will require a stand where you’re willing to give up your natural life, but if you treat every opportunity to be a witness of whose child you are and boldly stand on the truths of the Bible about how we are supposed to live and speak, you’ll realize that it is just like laying down your life. The things we do and want to do and how we spend our time is “our life” and sometimes it just takes us setting aside our own thoughts and being afraid to be embarrassed or not fit in to become the witness Jesus wants us to be.
