DAY 5 OF 5

Light of the World

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.”
- Isaiah 9:2

“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”
- Francis of Assisi

No matter how dark a room may seem, if you turn on a light or strike a match, the darkness can’t compete with the light. The darkness will always be driven away, and the light will overcome it. Kids who are afraid of the dark use a nightlight — a small beacon in the corner of their room, reminding them that light is victorious.

But often it can feel like our own inner darkness is too much. Our suffering, pain, or most often, our sin, can fill us with a darkness so inky it can be hard to wade through. The Psalmist must have felt this way too when he penned these words in Psalm 139:12, “Even darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.”

Our darkness isn’t dark to Jesus. Because He is the Light of the World — like striking a match or turning on a light — His presence makes darkness flee. No darkness is ever too dark for Him, including yours.

Jesus called Himself the Light of the World — and then, remarkably, He called His followers the same thing. Because we have Emmanuel dwelling within us, we too can show the world His light.

Even the darkness isn’t dark to Jesus. He is the Light of the World, and nothing could ever extinguish Him.

Consider the darkness in your own life and how you might need to ask the Light of the World to come in. Then consider how you might be the light of the world to others.

About this Plan

Names of Jesus by Change Conference

Shepherd, Prince of Peace, King of Kings, Emmanuel, Light of the World… Jesus is called all these names, but what do they really mean? Each name shows us a different aspect of the heart of Jesus, and how it all leads back to the love He has for us. Come be encouraged this Christmas season as together we draw closer to who Jesus is.
