Familia

DAY 3 OF 20

There's this really great show about a Cuban family living in Echo Park, Los Angeles, One Day at a Time. Of course, there's a nosy neighbor. They call him Schneider (well, abuela calls him es Schneider). Schneider is always with this family. At baseball games, family events . . . you get the idea. Does this sound familiar? Do you, or someone you know, have that one person who isn't blood but may as well be part of your family tree when you research it on Ancestry.com? This act of considering those not literally related to you as your own is a theme in the Bible.

Sure, you can show up on Sundays and be the first one to set up and the last to pack down. Yes, you can love God by spending hours in prayer. You can even love God by memorizing Scripture and recalling it in times of trouble. But true love and devotion to God looks like inviting your neighbor in for some hangs. Loving people who do not agree with you on every little thing. True love exists when we live it out with those around us, even if they are not biological family.

Who is not literally related to you? How can you show them love?

About this Plan

Familia

“Family” is a concept understood in every country, culture, and language, but we all have unique family structures, traditions, problems, and dysfunctions. It's not always easy to love our families, but the Bible is full of guidance on how to love each other well — we just have to be willing to apply that at home. In this 20-day devotional series from Grow Curriculum, we'll discover how to do that.
