DAY 9 OF 14

What Is the Bible?

Throughout history, and through the pages of the Bible, people have encountered the presence of God. And they have been radically changed as a result. The Bible is not like any other book. There’s something special about it—something miraculous

Don’t miss out on the magic and mystery of the Bible by trying to force it to be something it’s not. So we’ll start with the basics. For example, what kind of book is the Bible?

The Bible is not a textbook with the answers to all of our questions.

It’s not a rulebook with all the rules of life.

It’s not a book of inspiring quotes to make us feel better when we’re feeling bad.

And it’s not a self-help book full of tips and tricks to make our lives better.

It is so much more than any of those things.

The Bible is a story that leads to Jesus. It changes us into people who love God and others with all that we are.

One thing that makes the Bible unique is that it is not a single book, but a collection of books. When we open the Bible, we’re stepping into a library of books and stories that are telling the same story. It’s a collection of history, parables, poetry, personal discourse, and more. And it was written by dozens of authors over the course of hundreds of years who were all inspired by God’s Spirit.

It doesn’t just have the power to inform us—it has the power to transform us.

It’s a beautiful combination of human authorship and divine inspiration that so beautifully models the story of joining together heaven and earth.

Today, just remember this: The Bible is a story that leads us to Jesus, and then changes us to be more like Him.

Journaling Questions

  • Write down one of the verses from today’s reading. What stands out to you about that verse? How can you begin to take the wisdom of those words and apply them to your life today?
  • What mistakes do people make when they try to understand the Bible?
  • What are some things that have helped you read and understand the Bible better?

Memory Verse

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 NIV
