God is delighted when we come together in prayer
Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.
Clearly, God loves it when we pray together. God is thrilled when His children come to Him in unity and pray with one heart and one voice. This does not mean that we are in the same room while one person prays and everyone else daydreams. No, that’s not what Jesus is talking about. When we pray with hearts together, hearts aflame for Christ, bringing our united petitions together to the Father’s throne—that’s what Jesus wants to see. At that moment, we are agreeing in prayer.
Why is this? Why do the united prayers of God’s people move Him so? I don’t know for sure. God loves our unity. He loves our oneness. He loves when we pray together. But ultimately, we do not fully know why this means so much to God.
But we know this: God is delighted when we come together in prayer. He is delighted. And so, Jesus adds another promise: “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” We already know that Jesus is with us, that Jesus will never leave us. So what does He mean when He says, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them”? Jesus must mean that He will be with us in a special sense, in a profound way, in a powerful way. If we gather together and seek the face of God, then count on it: Jesus is there, big time.
So, at every opportunity, pray together. Husbands and wives. Parents and kids. Friends. A small group. A ministry team. A band of brothers. The whole church. Or, better still, Christians throughout the city. Come together before Almighty God in prayer. And know God will be right there with you in some special way.
