Fasting From Social Mediaনমুনা
I had no idea how bad my impulse was to pick up my phone while my thought life ran rampant. The Bible is clear; we are to take inventory of our thoughts and think about these things in Philippians 4 verse 8, which says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” But I couldn’t fight this battle that was waged in my mind because I was too enamored in the virtual world. There was no way to dwell on the truths of God’s word and my circumstances, all the while escaping and living vicariously through my media pages. One day I realized I had to take those thoughts captive and engage in the spiritual warfare that was attacking my life. I had to choose to walk away, refocus and tear down every escape route that hindered me from facing my reality. Paul admonished the church of Ephesus in Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.”
The dash between our birth and death date signifies the space in time God has given us to fulfill His purpose through us. We are not to waste our days in a virtual world; neither should we use this as a way to pass the time. Everything that we do should be for the glory and honor of God. We should never use a platform to escape our reality. Not only does this cause us to live passively, but it also hinders our lives.
If you have used social media as a placebo during seasons of life when you should have been seeking God for healing and or dealing with life, I encourage you to make the decision today to fight your way out of your circumstances the right way. Set down social media and pick up the Holy Book, the Word of God and grow in your knowledge of Him. Search the scriptures to see what God has to say about your life and the fight you are experiencing. Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy, but God has come that we may have life and live that life more abundantly. Choose the latter.
Be encouraged.
About this Plan
In this devotional, I will share why I chose social media as a form of fasting and four ways God revealed that it had become a distraction. As fasting from food serves to cleanse the body of its impurities, a fast from social media will help you return to the Lord, change your habits, and redirect your impulses to healthier choices.
