Why Can't I?

DAY 6 OF 6

The Principle of Obedience

It would be a sad world if young people had no other person they could turn to. God didn’t want that to happen, so He provided adults who would care for your needs, who would be nearby almost constantly, and who would take a special interest in you. Who? Parents.

Of course, there is no guarantee parents won’t make mistakes or you might not wish they would do some things differently. But the Bible tells young people about the responsibility they have to their parents— “Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.” (Col. 3:20 NKJV)

Would you like to know God’s will about what you do or where you go? His will is often easier to find out than you might think. Have your parents told you their views? If so, you also know God’s will about the matter.

You see, the Lord’s will is for you to obey your parents. You probably knew that His plan for your life included how you would look, where you would live, and how tall you would be. But did you realize that your parents have an even more important part in His plan for you? If you turn your back on your parents’ wishes, you reject part of God’s plan for your life.

Take a good look at your father the next time he asks you to help with the lawn or to clean out the garage. He’s the father God wants you to have. Listen closely to your mother’s voice the next time she calls you for dinner. She’s part of God’s plan for you too.

Obedience isn’t easy. If you want to go somewhere and your parents say no, it’s tough to be gracious, but obedience is important. Learning to obey your parents, even when you think they are wrong, is an essential part of learning to obey the Lord (see 1 John 3:21-22).

How do you decide what to do or where to go? Keep in mind that you belong to God, that your decisions always affect others, and that what you do reflects on Christ. Remember, too,  you need to consult your own conscience and be obedient to your parents.

Put these Bible principles to work in your life today.
