Jesus Wept:Lessons From the Times Jesus Wept

DAY 3 OF 3

Hebrews 5:7 (NLT)

During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

There is a lot to learn from this scripture: fervent prayer, death, and reverent submission. Jesus prayed heartfelt prayers to the God who could save Him from death—physical and spiritual death. God answered Jesus because He humbled Himself before God. He always sought God and submitted to His perfect will.

Most of us cry when a situation deeply moves our hearts. What might happen if we prayed each time our hearts were deeply moved by the pain and injustice we see in the world? We would become agents of change. What might happen if all our prayers and petitions were heartfelt, and not casual? God would hear us, and we would experience heaven on earth in different situations, not only personally, but also in our sphere of influence, cities, and nations. The fervent prayer of the righteous is powerful because God hears us (James 5:16; 1 John 5:14-15).

Fervency in our prayers and petitions is an act of reverent submission. We can bring our minds into submission by focusing on the majesty of God, calling on the name of Jesus, or asking the Holy Spirit to help us. Practicing these things empowers me to press into God’s presence and heightens my awe of Him. No wonder the Bible says we should “Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name.” Psalm 100:4 (NLT) Praise and thanksgiving helps us to focus on the greatness and goodness of God, and brings us to a place of humility.

Like Jesus, we must also cry out to God to save us from spiritual death. When we humble ourselves by crying out fervently to Him, we will experience peace and freedom from anything that torments us.

Please take a moment and offer praise and thanksgiving to God. Meditate on His goodness and tell Him that you need Him more than anything. Surrender all to God.
