Taking God Seriously

DAY 1 OF 3

What does it mean to have a covenant with God?

A covenant is a spiritually binding relationship ordained by God through which He advances His kingdom. It’s the mechanism through which He accomplishes His purposes, goals and agenda. It’s an arrangement of a relationship, not merely an official contract. When you are aligned with God in His covenant, you are privy to His secrets. He lets you in on things others do not know.

If you’re married, you know what it’s like to have secrets that you share only with your spouse. As a couple, you share your innermost hopes and thoughts with each other. These are the hidden things accessible by the nature of the covenantal relationship of marriage. In fact, these secrets are often so valued and guarded that they are often spoken in whispers. You need to be close, not only relationally but often physically, in order to share secrets.

We can draw closer to God by fearing Him (Proverbs 9:10). When you do, He lets you in on His secrets. The covenant relationship brings you close enough to hear His whisper as He unveils His purposes and promises for your life when you are in close proximity to Him.

What is the difference between fearing God and being afraid of God?

About this Plan

Taking God Seriously

Because we have experienced God’s abundant love and grace, it’s easy to become lax about obedience. We don’t take Him seriously enough. We cease to fear Him, and we don’t consider the consequences of our disobedience. Let best-selling author Tony Evans teach you about the blessings that come from keeping a covenant with God and the danger that arises when we cease to take Him seriously.
