Encashing Opportunities

DAY 4 OF 7

Opportunity to Serve

In this passage, we see that Jesus kneels to wash the feet of His disciples. In those days, people walked barefoot or wore simple sandals. In Jewish custom, washing the feet was a mark of honor that the head of the family showed to his guests. The servants or slaves of the house washed the guests’ feet, but none were present here. Each disciple considered himself superior to others. Maybe Peter said: ‘Me? Washing others’ feet? Impossible! I am the closest to Jesus.’ Ditto with John: ‘Me? Washing others’ feet? No way! I am the person most loved by Jesus.’ Everyone may have thought so. Nobody offered to do this humble task. Seeing the need, Jesus proposes to do it Himself.

The day after the birth of my daughter, Bedesta, I received terrible news. My daughter can only live for 48 hours. My heart was broken into pieces. I received a lot of support, especially from my manager, who helped me a lot during this difficult time. Given her social position, she could have maintained a professional distance, but she anticipated my needs and did everything to make me feel comfortable. By the grace of God, my daughter is in very good health today.

The reflection of my manager’s love, her service, her compassion toward me had a direct consequence on my work. My desire to work well has tripled. Since my manager supported me without counting the cost, I also wanted to invest myself in projects without considering my schedule, my workload, etc.

To put ourselves at the service of others is also an investment. It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). We cannot harvest without sowing. Being a leader is not just about giving directions, but also being a model in serving others. J Donald Walters said: ‘Leadership in an opportunity to serve. It is not a trumpet call to self-importance.’

"Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave." (Matthew 20:25-27, MSG)

Father, help me to focus on others’ needs and to serve them in humility and love.
