CALLED OUT: CALLING’S FOUNDATION
One thing we can always count on in life is wild weather. In recent years, across the world, numerous storms, floods and other natural disasters have had a huge impact on the lives of individuals, communities and nations. In these tragic situations, it can be surprising which buildings are still standing after the storm passes or the floods recede. Some buildings remain standing and others will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. The big difference between the buildings that stay upright in the midst of storms and floods and those that get swept away is the strength of the foundations the building is built upon.
Our lives can also be susceptible to various "storms" or "floods." We can find ourselves in situations where we feel loosing grip, at the mercy of forces far beyond our control. It is in these seasons and situations where we need to ask ourselves what foundation we have built our lives upon. We can build our lives on all sorts of things: success, achievement, possessions, the opinions or favour of people, or the affection of loved ones for example. But the truth is, all of these things can be shaken by the circumstances of our lives.
In light of the challenges that we face in life, the question remains: how do we actually stay in our calling? How do we ensure our lives are built upon the right foundations?
Firstly, our calling’s foundation is Jesus. Paul describes Jesus as the chief cornerstone in Ephesians 2:19-22. It is upon Him that the whole church is built. Together, we all find our calling in Him. No other foundation can be built but that which Jesus has laid down (1 Corinthians 3:10-11). Our lives were created by Him and for Him, and when our calling is found in Him, we won’t be shaken when life’s circumstances change, or when tragedy strikes.
Secondly our calling’s foundation is the word of God. Jesus says in Matthew 7:24-27 that when we obey His word, we will be strong in the Lord. Our lives will be like a house built upon a rock - able to withstand the greatest storms, floods, upheaval, tragedy and unforeseen circumstances that may come our way.
Finally, the foundation of our calling are the promises and the people of God. Hebrews 10:22-23 (MSG) encourages us to keep a firm grip on God’s promises because they will keep us moving forward towards His calling on our lives. As we continue to gather together and encourage each other with the promises of God, we will be spurred on to stay faithful to all God has for us.
APPLICATION/ACTION QUESTIONS
- What are the foundations you are building your life and your calling upon? (Success? Accruing possessions? Relationships? Fame? Opportunities? or JESUS?)
- What are the promises of God’s word that you are building your life upon? Find three scriptures this week that inspire you about your calling to follow Jesus.
- Who are the people in your world who believe in God’s calling on your life? This week, reach out to one of these people in your life, walk through the scriptures together and pray into the call of God over your life, declaring God’s promises over your life and your future.
PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I choose today to build my life and my calling on firm foundations. Thank You for all You have done for me, and thank You for calling me to become like You in all that I am and all that I do. I pray You will speak to me through Your word and surround me with people who know You and who are committed to their calling as well as mine. I choose today to trust in Your promises over my life and to build my life upon You. In Jesus' name, Amen
We hope this plan encouraged you to step out and embrace the calling God has for your life.
