Through Her Eyes: A Call to Extravagant Devotion That Defies Culture

DAY 1 OF 8

The Worth and the Cost

This was a moment that shook history. Jesus is in the final days leading up to the crucifixion. Even though He told His disciples that He is going to die, they miss it. Even so, one woman recognized the reality of what was at stake; Mary of Bethany. She is a woman with a brief biography, but her life is forever remembered on the pages of history. She seizes the moment by doing an act that leaves everyone in the room in awe.

She takes spikenard, an expensive oil worth a year’s wages, and pours it upon Jesus. This fragrance, originating from the foothills of the Himalayas in Northern India, has made its way to the small obscure town of Bethany. Instantly the fragrance fills the whole room. It’s precious, valuable, and costly. A drop would normally suffice, but not this time. Every drop must be spent; nothing spared.

This man, likewise fully God, was sitting in a crowded room of those whom He had created. One woman recognized His worth. One woman knew this truth. He is worth everything; a year’s wages or a lifetime. He is deserving. He is worth it. He is the creator, sustainer, and the savior.

Jesus promised that wherever the Gospel is proclaimed what she has done will be told in her memory. Why does this story have such magnitude? It’s simple. This is the type of response that the Gospel deserves. He is worth it all. Give Him your all. Remember Him, look to Him, and honor Him. Don’t miss this moment.

Challenge:

Is Jesus precious to you?

How can you respond to the reality of His worthiness?
