100 Days in the New Testament: The Athlete's Challenge

DAY 36 OF 100

Making Plays

Ready:

“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Romans 5:8 NLT

Set:

Most of us have seen the word love thrown around a lot. “I love playing soccer, I love Nike trainers or I love Gatorade frost glacier cherry!” In our culture, love is often undervalued for what it truly is.

One of the key words in this verse is “demonstrates.” The reason why this is so important is because God didn’t just say that He loves us, He demonstrated it. Even while He knows the worst sin in your life, that deep dark sin that only you know about yourself, He chose to die for you. Jesus got off the bench and made a play for you when you didn’t deserve it.

The love of God is more than just talk, it is action. The question we need to wrestle with is does our love of God just talk or does it have action also? It is incredibly easy for us to say we love God, wear verses on our eye black or pray at the 50-yard line on game day, and then live like we don’t love Him at all once we leave the field.

We should be encouraged that Christ is gracious enough to still die for us despite our failures. But we should also be encouraged to then live in response to that incredible reality. Our lives and eternity are ultimately changed by the actions of our Savior. Are you living a life that can change the eternity of someone else?

Go:

  • How can you show love to a teammate when they are at their worst?
  • What are the implications of the verse on your life?

Weekly Challenges:

Find a teammate who you have a difficult time loving and pray for and encourage them.
