THE SHIELD OF FAITH
A Christian's life journey is spiritual warfare. Just like a soldier who is about to enter a battlefield, all of us also need armor. Just like physical warfare, spiritual warfare also requires spiritual preparation and equipment. Realizing this fact, the word of God invites all of us to be strong in the strength of His power today by taking up the whole armor of God (Eph. 6: 10-17).
One of the spiritual weapons we deserve to wear is the shield of faith. The shield of faith is used as a defensive weapon against the fiery arrows of the evil one. We can have more understanding about this matter by looking at the actual function of the shield for a soldier at that time.
The word ‘shield’ originates from the Greek word ‘Thureos’. There are 2 kinds of shields: the large shield and the small shield. The large rectangular shield is used for major warfare. The small shield is used in minor battles or to guard in peaceful situations. The shield consists of two layers of wood which are glued together. The shield is used to ward off any sharp fiery arrows from the enemy. Before directing the fiery arrow at the enemy, the arrow is first dipped in hot asphalt. It is then ignited with fire and directed at the opponent using a bow.
This is also the function of our faith in Lord Jesus. We need to have strong faith in Lord Jesus. Our faith will be useful for warding off the devil’s attacks in our thoughts, such as the attacks of anxiety and pressure. We also need to build our faith continuously to ward off all the fiery arrows from the evil one in the form of deviant teachings.
