Real Hope: The Road to the Cross

DAY 10 OF 10

THE TOMB

I love the way that the Bible gives us so many fascinating ‘supporting characters’ or ‘bit parts’ throughout its pages.

All four Gospels refer to Joseph of Arimathea and where he fit into Easter’s narrative of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. We know he was a rich man and a member of the Sanhedrin, the elite religious leaders of the time, but more importantly he was a ‘disciple of Jesus’. John’s Gospel informs us that his faith in Jesus was in secret, ‘for fear of the Jews’ (John 19:38).

But when the time came and the rubber met the road, Joseph bravely acted in a way that made his faith very public. Going to Pilate to ask for Jesus’ body meant that he stood to lose everything: wealth, influence, reputation and possibly his life. He put it all on the line. His secret was out. There was no turning back. A courageous sacrificial act showed what his Saviour meant to him.

This was his moment. He became a key part of the greatest event in human history by facing his fears and being obedient to God’s call.

At Easter, what better time to pray about what is our moment and where we fit in to God’s master plan.

About this Plan

Real Hope: The Road to the Cross

Every year, Christians from around the world pause and reflect on the final hours of our Saviour’s life – to take time to be still and sit in the moments of pain, sacrifice, forgiveness and love written for us in the Gospels - so that we can understand the gravity and cost of the gift given to us through Christ.
