Flashlight Night

DAY 3 OF 5

God Is There Even When I Can’t See Him

“Do you see the wall?”

Mom asks.

“Yes, Mom, I see it every night.”

She flips a switch, *click*

Out goes the light.

“How about,” Mom asks,

When it’s dark,

Do you see it now?”

“I don’t,” I answer quietly.

“...but I know it’s there somehow.”

Devotion

Look around you and say what you see. A sofa? A tree? Someone in your family? You don’t have to have much faith to believe that what you see is there, do you? Now try closing your eyes. How do you know all those things are still there? You have to have faith.

When we can’t see what God is doing, it can feel as if we are in the dark. But that doesn’t mean He’s not there. Faith means believing in God no matter what. It means trusting Him even when He hasn’t answered our prayers—yet.

Question

What is something you believe in that you can’t see?

Prayer

God, I have faith in You! I believe you are there even when I can’t see You or hear Your voice. Help me believe more. Help me to have faith that you are with me whether it is dark or light. Amen.

Activity

Close your eyes or put on a blindfold. Take turns with a parent, sibling, or friend guiding each other around the room or backyard. What does it feel like to have to trust someone to guide you when you can’t see where you’re going? What does it feel like to help someone who has to trust in you?

About this Plan

Flashlight Night

As we encourage our children to take their concerns to God, we know they may be confused or discouraged when He doesn’t seem to answer. With excerpts from the book Flashlight Night, explore this dilemma from a kid’s perspective, helping your child see that, however things may appear, God hears and cares about every prayer.
