Mean Girls: The Power of Words With Leanna Crawford

DAY 1 OF 5

DAY 1

Mean girls don't remember what they said

Well, it's funny 'cause I can't seem to forget

It’s amazing to me how quickly broken bones can heal while pain from words can stick with you for a lifetime. When I was 13 years old, I broke my hand because the ground gave way underneath my big horse, Crispy (most of my childhood was either spent singing or riding horses, sometimes simultaneously). A quick visit to the doctor’s office was all that was needed and thankfully the hot pink color was available for my cast, so that was the obvious choice. It didn’t take long for it to heal and after a little while, I forgot all about the pain.

I wish wounds caused from hurtful words could be bandaged up with a hot pink cast but unfortunately, they don’t heal the same way.

If you and I were sitting across from each other at my favorite coffee shop, I’m sure you could tell me exactly what hurtful words have been said to you and how they made you feel. Because the sting is all too real and present, even if it’s been years since it happened. That’s the thing about words, the pain tends to stick around a whole lot longer than a broken bone.

When I wrote about Mean Girls in my song it’s because I think we’ve all run into destructive people. Like you, I’ve had my own encounters with “mean girls” - people who didn’t think about what they said, or they just didn’t care, but either way their words left some lasting damage on my heart.

Those hurtful comments may feel permanent to us, but they are not permanent to God. I don’t know your story, but I wish I could hug you and tell you that those words don’t define the person who God created you to be. Those words might replay in your mind, but they aren’t what’s written on your heart. You are chosen, loved and worth so much more than you could ever imagine.

Prayer: Lord, help me to forgive the people who hurt me and help me to pursue Your words instead of other’s.
