New Year Devotional: Selah Compassion Conversations

DAY 5 OF 10

Finding Mercy

“But when the kindness and love of God, our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”

—Titus 3:4-5

Selah

Often our understanding of the word justice is focused on how things should be done. We focus on rules, expectations, rights and wrongs. However, the biblical view, found in the Hebrew expression of justice, reflects the merciful restoration of how life could be.

God’s mercy extended to us.

Following His lead, we then find mercy for our neighbours as well.

The definition of mercy is to have compassion or forgiveness towards someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm. It was in God’s kindness that He sent Jesus with love and mercy.

There is no health insurance or safety net when you live in poverty. Medical emergencies plunge struggling children into life and death situations—and that’s in ordinary times, without the added desperation of a global pandemic.

Finding mercy for those who cannot help us in return, is an important activation of our generosity in Christ.

Reflection Question:

How can you extend mercy this week in your neighbourhood?

Prayer:

Dear God,

We wait with expectation for the coming justice found in the redemptive work of the cross. Help us to remember your mercy as we pray and seek. your work, at work, within us.

Amen

About this Plan

New Year Devotional: Selah Compassion Conversations

We have officially started the year! The word “Selah” throughout scripture is used as an exclamation mark at the end of a verse to help us pause and reflect. As we take time to look back on the year that has passed, we want to invite you on a devotional journey about justice.
