A Place Called Heaven Devotional

DAY 4 OF 7

Worship and Work In Heaven

When we get to heaven, we are going to participate in indescribable worship—so how does Scripture define worship? To begin, worship is much more comprehensive than simply a formal time of gathering. Worship is the continual awareness of, gratitude toward, and submission to God in everything we do.

In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul said, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” There is a way of going through our day—conducting your work, sitting down for a meal, or relaxing—where God is always a part of your existence, and that is what worship is in the broader sense.

While worshiping God will be a central activity in heaven, it will not be our only activity. Just as Christians today can offer praise to God while engaging in other tasks throughout the week, Christians in the new heaven and new earth will worship God during special, designated times as well as while involved in other activities.

Heaven will not only be a time of indescribable worship but will also be a place of enjoyable work. You and I were created in the image of God, and therefore we, too, were created to be workers. Although Eden was perfect, it was not self-sustaining. God did His part in creating this slice of Paradise on earth, but He gave people the responsibility of cultivating it—tilling the soil and planting and harvesting crops.

Many people believe that work is a curse from God, that it was a punishment for humankind’s sin against God. That is not true. Genesis 2:15 takes place before the fall in Genesis 3; in our original form, we were created to work. Now, it is true that after the sin of Genesis 3, work became harder for us, but work itself has never been a curse.

We all are to be involved in doing something productive. And it is going to be that way in heaven. If God wants us to be workers on earth, then He wants us to be workers in heaven as well.

What do you think it will be like to worship God in heaven? Do you tend to view work as a curse or as a blessing?

Prayer: God, thank You for creating me in Your image and giving me the privilege of both worshipping you and working here and in heaven to bring you glory.

About this Plan

A Place Called Heaven Devotional

As Christians, someday we will leave this earth and live with God in heaven—yet many of us know very little about heaven. Thinking about heaven changes the way we live on earth. This week, Dr. Robert Jeffress takes us to God’s Word for answers to common questions about heaven. We’ll learn to live more wisely, prepare for the future, and possess the joy that heaven’s certainty brings today.
