Dc Talk - Jesus Freak 25

DAY 6 OF 8

Like It, Love It, Need It

We don’t have to look much further than the evening news to realize that our world is aching within. Most of us would not have to look much further than our own lives and hearts to find an ache, a hurt, a discontentment, or unrest. We are not ‘okay’ and even our constant attempt to pretend like we are becomes more and more exhausting.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7, NIV)

We spend lifetimes looking for peace. Many of us never find the great peace referred to in verse 7 because we fail to take what verse 6 says to heart.

If this peace is the peace of God, and God is indeed “over all, in all, and through all” (Eph. 4:6, NIV), then peace is available to us right now. The peace we are constantly searching for can be experienced in the present.

Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Phil. 4:6, NIV) We do not have this peace in our lives because we are not faithful to pray, and we are anxious about everything.

You will not find peace by simply trying to change your environment. We often think to ourselves, “If I could just change this person…” or “If I could just change this situation, I would finally have some peace.”

The peace of God “will guard your hearts and your minds...” (Phil. 4:7). The heart and the mind are where the battle takes place. The storms around you do not matter as much as your inner storms. The struggle for peace takes place on the inside. Prayer is not a magic wand; it is a discipline. Prayer is taking hold of the Unshakeable One when your life feels out of control.
