Commendation
The three key words defining this final statement of Jesus are ‘father’, ‘commend’, and ‘spirit’. Here we are reminded of the profoundly confusing but important tri-unity of God – the Son entrusting or consigning his Spirit to the Father. Hadn’t this been the pattern since the manger in Bethlehem? Nevertheless, we hear in these final words our Saviour giving over in confidence everything he’d accomplished to the Father. Can we do any less?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, sometimes it’s so difficult to imagine the cross – to imagine the dynamic tension between the three persons of the Trinity in those awful few hours. Still, we take your word for what it says, and stand in awe of all you accomplished for us. For me. Thank you Lord. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
