Book of Amos

DAY 1 OF 3

HUMILITY OR PRIDE

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:10)

Many movies tell us of great characters in this world. These characters could be taken from the true or fictional stories. All stories of those movies may have inspired us. We watch their struggles and greatness as they try to overcome their struggles and become a savior. We might be carried away by the strength and expertise of the characters while watching that movie.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying great story characters in the movies we watch. However, let's not forget that there is a God who is behind all of these events on the earth. Likewise, the prophet Amos wrote about what would happen to the nations at that time. God is Almighty, above all the greatness of humans on this earth. He is omniscient. None of these human thoughts can be hidden from Him.

Some nations may be very advanced in their technology. Humans, with all of their intelligence, knowledge, and inventions, can forget that all of these things have been known to God, beforehand. Human pride or arrogance makes them deny the existence of God. Yet if we go outside of our home at night and see many stars in the sky, we can see the evidence of God’s existence, because He is the One who places and rules this universe. God is against human pride because pride does not come from Him.

Pride does not only happen to unbelievers; it can also happen to believers. When a believer feels self-righteous and belittles others, he is disrespecting the Lord who created everyone. Proverbs says that pride creates nothing but strife and that it is the beginning of destruction. Let us be gentle and humble in heart, just like Jesus.

People are just like a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
