Family Christmas: A Devotional for Kids

DAY 9 OF 12

A Man After God’s Heart

By Danny Saavedra

“For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.” – John 7:42 (NLT)

Imagine you were given a choice between two gifts. You were told that inside one of the gifts, there was $100, and in the other, there was only $1. One gift was large and decorated beautifully on the outside, while the other was just plain. Which one would you choose? Most people would probably choose the prettier gift, thinking the $100 was in it.

In the Bible, we learn about a guy named David. Back then, the nation of Israel didn’t have a king, and the people really wanted one. It would be like if our country didn’t have a president. So God gave them King Saul, but he later turned away from God.

That’s when God sent a man named Samuel to find a new king. When Samuel went to Jesse’s house, he thought for sure the Lord would want Jesse’s oldest and biggest son to be the king. Instead, the Lord chose the youngest son, David, who was out watching the sheep.

God chose David even though he didn’t look as big and handsome as his older brothers. God didn’t care that David didn’t look like a strong king. Instead, God picked him because He knew David loved Him with all his heart and was obedient to Him.

Just like God, we should never judge a gift, a person, or anything by how it looks on the outside. What really matters is what is on the inside!
