What Does The Bible Say About Grief And Sorrow?

DAY 5 OF 10

Having sympathy with other people’s sorrows.

Besides bringing our sorrows to God, we are also encouraged to share them with fellow believers. Within the church, all should have “unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8). That way, believers can support each other and share each other’s burdens. After all, we are like members of a body: if one member suffers, all suffer together (see 1 Corinthians 12)! It is good to show brotherly love by sympathizing with our ‘brothers and sisters’ in Christ, in good times as well as in bad.

We don’t always have a solution for the problems of others and we can’t remove their grief. But as believers, we can comfort people by sharing “the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” That goes further than friendly words or loving attention. It really helps the other by directing his or her attention to the Lord, Who is “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). He can really help!

About this Plan

What Does The Bible Say About Grief And Sorrow?

There is a lot of grief and sorrow in the world. This is all a result of human sin, and we are facing the consequences every day. The Bible does not play that down. But it also shows us how it is possible to rejoice in the midst of sorrow, and how God will ultimately create a new earth where grief and sorrow will be no more.
