20/20: Seeing Yourself in Light of the Lord

DAY 3 OF 5

God, Your Rock

Psalm 73:25-26“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

The author of this Psalm had his eyes fixated on the Lord. As demonstrated in the verse above, his focus was more on God Himself than all that is God’s. He said, “there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” This means that the author did not place his focus on the blessings of God, nor the possessions or the creations of God. Instead, he placed his focus on God, the rock on which his trust was secure. He knew that God is the only true source of strength in this life. This passage from the Book of Psalms is a reminder that you need not depend on your own strength. On your own, you will fail; with your trust in Christ Jesus, you will succeed. He is enough.

The Apostle Paul knew that Christians would struggle to do what is right and lean on God as their strength. In response to this, he said, “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10) He goes on to say that, by putting on the full armor of God, a Christian will be able to take their stand against the schemes of the devil. Jesus has supplied you with everything you need to live in freedom. You are no longer a slave to the flesh; you are a child of the Most High. God is calling you to walk in freedom and strength, in love and power, not falling into the patterns that used to entrap you. Remember that nothing you could ever face is greater than the Spirit that lives in you—the Spirit of God.

Just as a car has a locking mechanism to ensure that nobody can enter without a key, you have an assurance from God that He is your source of security. In the times that you fail to place your trust in Him, falling into worry, sin, or stress, know that “the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)

Questions to Consider:

  • Do you rely on your own strength in times of difficulty?
  • When it seems like nothing in your life will get better and your habits just won’t change, where do you place your concerns?
  • Are you willing to look at God and accept His comfort and help instead of staring at your situation without seeing progress?
