Bear Hunt: You Have to Go Through Itনমুনা
When you go on a bear hunt, you’re going to need a few things. Because I’m not much of a hunter I had to look up the equipment needed for an actual bear hunt. What I learned was very relatable to our spiritual walk and the challenges we might face in life. Disclaimer: No bears were harmed in the making of this devotional.
1. You need a weapon. If you’re going to hunt, you need a really good weapon. Coincidentally, we also need a weapon as we go through life and come across our daily challenges. The good news is the Bible is a really great weapon. Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. Ephesians 6:17 talks about the armor of God, and how the Word of God is the “Sword of the Spirit.” Understanding, knowing, and memorizing scripture is key for our successful use of this weapon.
2. You need good optics. On a bear hunt it’s imperative to have something to help you see at long-range distances. I mean, let’s face it, hand-to-hand combat with a bear is probably not the best strategy. Philippians 4:8 explains we need to focus on things that are excellent and in Philippians 3:10-15 Paul urges us to keep our eyes on the prize and work for what’s ahead—the end goal. Any good hunter would tell you before they begin their hunt, they’ve mapped out their path and prepared their weapons. Just like that, we as followers of Jesus need to understand our goal and work ferociously towards that goal no matter what distractions are thrown our way.
3. You need bear spray. That’s right, it’s a real thing. Bear spray is something bear hunters keep on them at all times. It’s used when you can’t get your weapon out soon enough, and you didn’t see the bear coming with your optics. Pull that bad boy out and let loose! Bear spray is basically pepper spray on steroids. It’s good to have a backup plan, something you can rely on when you’re in a pinch. Many times, this looks like having a counselor, friend, mentor, or someone to remind you of truth and the goal. Matthew 7:7 reminds us that we only receive help when we ask and Proverbs 3 and 4 are adamant about the importance of wisdom from others. Make sure you have bear spray, because as Muhammed Ali said, “We all have a plan until we get punched in the face.”

About this Plan
Have you ever tried running away from your challenges? My counselor once told me, “It’s time to stop avoiding your problems and learn to face them.” It takes a lot of courage to walk through difficult situations, but it’s the only way we will grow in our relationship with Christ. “Bear Hunt” is a five-day journey on facing our everyday challenges and how to become stronger because of them.
