Read the Book: Fall Bible Plan

DAY 68 OF 103

Producing Thanks

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3

We yearn for inspiration, whether it’s in our music, theater, vacations, or our everyday lives. We desire to think or feel so deeply that it’s truly transformative for us. The stories that inspire us the most are those that come when we are facing challenges. Sometimes we need to see the goodness that is happening in and through others to remind us to continue on our own journey.

Many years ago, the Apostle Paul and his companions, Silvanus and Timothy, experienced trial after trial in their pursuit of spreading the gospel to areas where they faced opposition. In order to persevere, these men not only leaned on God’s Spirit that inhabited them, but they also trusted the work of the Lord being done through people they loved.

An example of this is found in Paul’s letter to the church at Thessalonica. In this letter, Paul tells the Thessalonians he is continuously thanking God for what He was doing in their lives. What are the things about this body of believers that provided strength and worship for Paul?

First, it was their work of faith. This wasn’t a church that was active for activity’s sake. Instead, they worked from their trust in Jesus. Second, it was their labor of love; this church was motivated by their love of God and others. What motivates our actions speaks so much about our character. Last, they were steadfast in hope. The resurrection of Jesus had given this church a relentless hope that carried them through many challenges.

Lord Jesus, I pray that You would work in and through me in a way that provides encouragement for others. Amen.

Family connection: This week, read 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 and ask your family, "What are you thankful to God for?" Challenge each family member to take a moment this week and tell someone why they are thankful for them.
