Work As Worship: True Success

DAY 3 OF 3

It’s only natural that the disciples wanted to know how they were doing.

Most of us go through our lives assessing where we stand compared to everyone else. Whether it is physical attractiveness, intelligence, popularity, or wealth, there’s a constant voice in our heads rating our position. A voice that is always asking who’s ahead of us and how we can jump ahead a few places in line.

But is it possible that we’re asking the wrong question or even that we’re in the wrong line?

Jesus could have responded to the disciples’ question with a whole checklist of what to do to get the equivalent of a spiritual A+ or gold star.

You can probably think of most of the list yourself. Pray all the time. Be nice to everyone. Wear modest clothes. Think pure thoughts.

But instead, Jesus pointed at a toddler and said that he or she was the ultimate winner.

Think about a child you know. They’re probably trusting, loving, curious, friendly, and eager to learn.

How ironic would it be if God viewed your defense of a bullying victim as more in line with the kingdom of heaven than someone reciting whole books of the Bible from memory?

What if, after all your efforts to be viewed as mature, you discover that being child-like in your relationship with God and even those around you is the ultimate definition of success?

· What does it mean that unless you “become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven?”

· If you were to change and become like a child, what’s the first change you’d make?
